Buffalo Bayou Park
Length: About 2.3 miles end to end (Sabine St to Shepherd Dr); the loop using both banks is roughly 5 miles
Shade: Partly — open sun on most of the main trail; some shade under the bridges and along the Kinder footpath
Tip: Park at Lost Lake or the Water Works, walk the Kinder footpath (no bikes) with little ones, and finish at the Eleanor Tinsley Park playground. Go early in summer.
Not verified: Exact trail distances from the park's map PDF; restroom locations: buffalobayou.org
Memorial Park — Seymour Lieberman Trail & Eastern Glades
Length: About 3 miles (Seymour Lieberman loop); Eastern Glades is a shorter boardwalk stroll
Shade: Good on the Lieberman loop (pine canopy); open around the Eastern Glades lawns
Tip: The Clay Family Eastern Glades is the easy win with a stroller: boardwalk, lake, lawn, restrooms. Save the full 3-mile loop for bigger kids or a jogging stroller.
Not verified: Playground location and restroom details
Houston Arboretum & Nature Center
Length: 5+ miles of trails inside; the inner loops are 1–2 miles
Shade: Mostly shaded (woods); the savanna loop is open
Tip: Free admission; parking is $6.50 but free on Thursdays and the second Sunday of each month. The Nature Playscape by the Nature Center is the toddler favorite. Bring bug spray.
Hermann Park — McGovern Centennial Gardens & lake loop
Length: About 2 miles around the park; the Centennial Gardens walk is under 1 mile
Shade: Partly — good shade on the garden paths and near the Japanese Garden; the lake loop is open
Tip: Pair the walk with the train (day pass $6 weekdays / $7 weekends per the Conservancy) and a snack at the Lake Plaza. Gardens are free, open 9 am–7 pm in warmer months.

Terry Hershey Park
Length: 11+ miles of trail in total; do the 2-mile out-and-back from the Memorial Dr entrance
Shade: Good — much of the paved trail runs under big trees along the bayou
Tip: Park at the main entrance, 15200 Memorial Dr (the address Precinct 4 lists). Watch for fast cyclists on the paved trail; keep little riders on the right.
Not verified: Exact restroom and playground locations along the trail
Mercer Botanic Gardens
Length: 5.7 miles of trail across 393 acres (Precinct 3); the garden loops are flat and short
Shade: Good in the East Side gardens; the West Side nature trails are wooded
Tip: Free, open 8 am–7 pm. The East Side ponds, bridges and the children's garden keep toddlers busy; the West Side trails are for older kids who like 'real hiking' without hills.
Not verified: Playground: none confirmed
Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center
Length: 16 miles of trail in total; about 8 miles are accessible/paved (Precinct 3)
Shade: Mostly shaded — bottomland forest along Spring Creek
Tip: Free, open 7 am to dusk. The Redbud Hill Homestead and Akokisa village are a built-in history lesson; the creek 'beach' is a favorite in dry weather. Mosquitoes are serious here — spray up.

Brazos Bend State Park
Length: Several loops; 40-Acre Lake Trail is about 1.2 miles and flat
Shade: Partly — open along the lake levees, shaded in the woods
Tip: $7 per person 13+, kids 12 and under free (TPWD). This is the alligator park: they are real and they are everywhere along 40-Acre Lake, so hold hands and stay on the trail. Reserve a day pass online on weekends.

Kleb Woods Nature Preserve
Length: 3.86 miles of nature trails (Precinct 4)
Shade: Good — pine and hardwood forest
Tip: Free. Quiet, birdy and rarely crowded; the preserve runs free nature programs on Wednesday mornings. Best for kids who can walk a mile on their own.

White Oak Bayou Greenway (Heights section)
Length: 17 miles in total (Houston Parks Board); do the 1.5-mile stretch from Stude Park to the MKT trail crossing
Shade: Little — mostly open sky, so this is a morning or evening walk
Tip: Start at Stude Park (playground, splash pad in summer, restrooms) and walk the paved greenway. It connects to the MKT Trail if you want to add a Heights coffee stop.
