Indoor days: too hot, too wet
Ten real Houston spots for the days the weather wins. Prices were read from each place's own site in October 2026 and will change — anything we could not confirm says “check site.” No paid placements in this list, no fake reviews; the “worth it?” notes are our honest opinion.

Children's Museum Houston
Cost: $21.95 per person ages 1+ online ($23.95 at the door); under 1 free. Free every Thursday 5–8 pm (tickets drop 48 hours before)
Worth it? Worth it. Three floors, a toddler-only zone (Tot*Spot), a water area (bring a change of clothes) and a kid-scale city. Weekends are packed; go at opening or on a Thursday evening.
Houston Museum of Natural Science
Cost: Adults $25, kids 3–11 $16, under 3 free (permanent exhibits). Free Tuesdays 5–8 pm. Butterfly Center, planetarium and giant screen are extra
Worth it? Worth it for dinosaur kids: the paleontology hall alone is an hour. The Cockrell Butterfly Center is the best $12 add-on for little ones. Under 4s mostly want to run; keep it short.
Downtown Aquarium
Cost: Aquarium exhibit only: adults $16.99, kids under 42" $14.99, 2 and under free. All-day pass with rides: $25.99 adult / $24.99 child
Worth it? Mixed. The aquarium walk-through is short (about an hour) and the white tigers are the memory-maker; the rides and midway are where the money goes. Good rainy-day pick if you set a budget before you walk in.
The Health Museum
Cost: Adults $15, kids 3–12 $12, under 3 free. Free Family Thursday 2–5 pm (reserve online). Parking $10
Worth it? Worth it on a free Thursday or paired with HMNS next door. The walk-through body exhibit and the DeBakey Cell Lab ($6 add-on, age limits apply) land best with elementary kids.
Houston Public Library story times
Cost: Free
Worth it? Always worth it. Baby, toddler and family story times run weekly at most branches, often in English and Spanish. The calendar on houstonlibrary.org filters by age; Harris County Public Library (hcpl.net) covers the suburbs.
Wonderwild (indoor playground)
Cost: Weekday open play: pre-walkers $12.50, walkers $15 plus tax (their site); weekend pricing differs — check site
Worth it? Worth it for crawlers to about age 6: soft play, a rope course and real coffee for grown-ups. Weekdays are calm; weekends book parties, so check the open-play calendar first.

Kids Empire
Cost: General admission about $19.90 per child (1–17), 2 adults included free; infants free with a sibling (kidsempire.com)
Worth it? Fine for a hot afternoon: a big multi-level play structure, slides and a toddler corner. Loud and busy on weekends. Socks required.

Urban Air Adventure Park
Cost: Varies by location and pass level — check site
Worth it? Worth it for jumpers: trampolines, a ropes course and climbing walls. Kids under 5 do better at the dedicated toddler time (ask the location). Grip socks are an extra few dollars.

Houston Fire Museum
Cost: Adults $10, kids 3–12 $5, 2 and under free. Tue–Sat 10 am–4 pm
Worth it? Small but a hit with truck kids: a restored 1899 fire station and a Junior Firefighter Station play area. Plan on about an hour; street or paid-lot parking only.
Lone Star Flight Museum
Cost: Adults $18, youth 12–17 $15, kids 5–11 $12, 4 and under free. Free parking. Free Museum Day Tuesdays (registration required; see site)
Worth it? Worth it for plane kids: real warbirds you can walk around, flight simulators and a big hangar to burn energy in. It's a drive, so pair it with lunch in Clear Lake.
